DJ Mag has published a new Recognise instalment centred on Black Rave Culture. Recognise 117 pairs a 66-minute mix with an interview feature on the Washington, DC trio of James Bangura, Nativesun and Amal, giving listeners a new entry point into the group’s club-focused sound and the ideas behind it.
The mix moves through several of the styles that shape Black Rave Culture’s identity, including UK garage, rap bootlegs and Baltimore club. In the feature, that approach sits inside a much broader range that includes techno, house, electro, gqom, amapiano, baile funk, Jersey club, footwork, juke, jungle and breakbeat. DJ Mag frames the project around reclaiming Black dance music history and representing Black experiences through contemporary club music.
The Recognise feature arrives after the release of Black Rave Culture Vol. 4 in August. DJ Mag reports that the album was inspired by the trio’s travels and the people they met along the way, and that it includes collaborations with JD. Reid and BokBok. In the interview, the group describe that record as a push toward a middle ground: still built for the club, but also meant to work beyond it.
The profile also traces how the trio came together. Nativesun grew up in DC, Bangura in Newark, and Amal spent formative years in Rwanda and Kenya before first DJing while studying at Howard University. Their paths converged through New York label HAUS of ALTR. After all three appeared on its HOA010 compilation in June 2020, they started making music together, leading to Black Rave Culture Vol. 1 in May 2021.
