Brighton is set to host an extraordinary art exhibition featuring a collaboration between world-renowned DJ Carl Cox and acclaimed UK photographic artist Mark Vessey. Opening at the Enter Gallery on Bond Street, the exhibition showcases pivotal records from Cox's extensive 150,000-plus vinyl collection, highlighting the music that has shaped his illustrious career.
This unique collaboration captures a musical journey through genres such as funk, soul, disco, and rare groove, progressing to rave, techno, hip hop, electro, and pop. Each piece of artwork not only features iconic releases from artists like Run DMC, Carrie Lucas, Fleetwood Mac, Duran Duran, Lil Louis, and Doug Lazy but also includes a personal story from Cox about each record's significance.
Cox expressed the emotional depth involved in selecting these records: “Each record I chose has a story behind it, and it was very emotional choosing the records that helped shape my journey.”
The gallery emphasized the importance of these records in Cox's career, stating: "Many of these records played a pivotal role in (Cox's) early days as a mobile DJ and his rise to fame as the ‘Three Deck Wizard.’"
Mark Vessey, known for his work celebrating icons of pop culture, shared his thoughts on the collaboration: “Carl Cox is unique in sewing together multiple generations through his passion for music. My hope in photographing them together is that they visually reflect his love and shared history back to us.”
Cox further reflected on the experience: "Watching Mark work really makes me understand how you can look deeper into art. It makes me realise what a privilege and responsibility I have when sharing my love of music with the dancefloor.”
The exhibition, titled 'Carl Cox by Mark Vessey,' will open on July 20, inviting visitors to explore the intersections of music and art through the lens of two creative powerhouses.
