Jeff Mills Unveils Part Two of Live at Knockdown Center in Spatial Audio
Techno Pioneer Embraces Cutting-Edge Audio Technology for Immersive Experience
Techno icon Jeff Mills has released the second and final part of his groundbreaking Live at Knockdown Center performance in Spatial Audio, now available on Apple Music. This project documents his March 14 show in New York, part of the Live at Liquid Room 30th Anniversary Tour.
The second installment of this immersive audio experience features tracks from techno stalwarts such as Robert Hood, Marcel Dettmann, Steve Bicknell, Ø [Phase], and Rødhåd. This particular set from the Knockdown Center was the only performance from the tour chosen for a Spatial Audio release, highlighting the importance Mills places on innovation in sound presentation.
Mills' vision for a multi-dimensional audio experience dates back to his iconic 1995 recording, 'Live at the Liquid Room' in Tokyo. At that time, he used multiple microphones to capture the room's ambiance, but technological limitations forced a reduction to stereo sound. Now, with advancements in audio technology, Mills has realized his original concept, using fourteen microphones in the Knockdown Center's expansive space to authentically capture the event's atmosphere.
"I was trying to do this 30 years ago," Mills remarked in an interview, underscoring his long-standing ambition to integrate the audience's energy into his recordings. The Spatial Audio mix refrains from artificially distributing sound, instead preserving the natural dynamics of the live event. This approach places Mills at the forefront, with the dancefloor's reactions enveloping the listener, creating a truly immersive experience.
Jeff Mills has had a prolific year, also releasing his conceptual album 'The Trip To Vega' on Axis Records. Both parts of 'Jeff Mills Live at Knockdown Center, Mar 14, 2026' are now available on Apple Music, offering listeners a chance to experience his pioneering soundscapes in a new dimension.
