Richie Hawtin will premiere a new Plastikman project at MUTEK.JP 2026 in Tokyo on November 23. PLASTIKMAN | POLYPHONIC FERMENTATION is scheduled for the festival's closing night at MoN Takanawa, where the live show is set for Box1000 with doors at 5pm and the performance at 6pm.
The work was made with visual artist Ali Demirel and is built from sounds and images recorded at sake breweries in Japan. According to We Rave You, the date marks Plastikman's first appearance in Japan in 16 years. The title refers to multiple parallel fermentation, a central part of sake brewing, and the report says Hawtin has been involved with that world for around 20 years.
We Rave You reports that Hawtin and Demirel visited three breweries in April: Gekkeikan in Kyoto, Shinmasa in Akita and Yoshida Sake Brewery in Ishikawa. They captured field recordings and footage there, which now form the basis of the new audiovisual piece.
Alongside the live set, an immersive sound and image installation is due to open in a 100-mat tatami room at the same venue. It is scheduled to run on November 23 and then return from December 23 to 27, with free admission. MUTEK's official Plastikman page carries the event details.
